Hello readers, this time I had to write a story inspired by a song; I was torn between several, but in the end I chose VIVO by Guaco. That Venezuelan band, I love it! So I hope you enjoy the music and the story.

«I feel a little sad about the decision I’ve made, but I’m determined; from today on, my days will be better. I miss you.»

—You need to start by stop sending messages to her cell phone —I whispered, letting go of the phone.

I walked to my favorite place in the cabin, to sit in a room I had equipped to make reading more comfortable. I had to read the last pages of an action book that had me intrigued. Although if that book were at my house, I’m sure I would have already finished it.

Standing before the large library, I decided to sit at the desk. It was completely attached to it, so I almost didn’t have to get up to have a book at hand. I loved the smell and everything inside each one of them.

Start writing; it’s better if you write down everything you feel once and for all; it doesn’t matter if she doesn’t answer you, what matters is showing your feelings. You always did that, didn’t you? —I thought, seeing my expression lines in a small mirror I had on the desk; they made me look a little older than I already was.

—Thirty-six years old, Alberto, it’s no good fooling yourself about all this too —I muttered with half a smile, squeezing my cheeks.

Once seated, I took a sheet of paper and the pen and began to write a letter to my beloved.

«Today I want us to remember together the last time we managed to see each other; I miss you, never doubt that.»

I got up from the desk to turn on the lights; it was starting to get dark, and the light reflected from the window wasn’t enough to see well. My cell phone started to ring. The sound provoked a cluster of sensations, the anxiety of imagining it was my Lucía. As best I could, I ran to my bedroom to manage to answer the call. With the cell phone in hand, I realized it was from my office.

—Mr. Hernández, how are you? Sorry if I’m bothering you, I’d like to know if you’ll attend the meeting with the accountants tomorrow.

—Yes, Miss Gutiérrez. Confirm my appointment; I’ll definitely be there tomorrow.

—Thank you, see you tomorrow.

—Goodbye, Miss Gutiérrez, have a good rest of your day.

—Same to you, sir —I sighed, cursing under my breath.

I would have loved for it to be my Lucía. Sitting back at the desk, I resumed the writing.

«I know you must like remembering that day. But I feel it’s necessary to explain some things to you so that I feel better. I can’t stop thinking about the moment I kissed you; I still have alive the image of your smile, I still feel that strong hug we gave each other. That day I realized you were the love of my life; I accepted that I could give everything for you. I felt alive in that instant, even though I was only twenty years old at the time. I feel like a beggar without having you, although I’m currently an admired man with several companies. Life left with you. I don’t want you to be sad about all this happening to me; I want you to know that just by remembering your name, I feel alive.»

The pen started to fail, because of the wet paper. I had just realized my tears were spread over the paper.

—Come on, Alberto, you must continue —I encouraged myself, but the bad feeling was unbearable; I got up quickly and hit the desk hard, as if that could give me strength to continue—. You have to finish the damn letter, you must close the cycle, Alberto! —I shouted, feeling the tears run more and more down my face.

I hit the desk table again, harder than necessary, and several books from the library fell, revealing the hundreds of letters I had written to my beloved. With all the determination left in me, I picked up each and every one of them, trying to leave everything as it was, but I didn’t manage it. In my bad mood, I set aside the ones I couldn’t put away and sat down again in front of the sheet to keep writing.

«Forgive me for not having protected you. By whims of life, you’re no longer with me; the time I lost I won’t get back, everything that happened has no remedy… Your death in that accident was terrible for me; I realized too late that I loved you with all my soul. This is not a goodbye; don’t feel that I’m leaving; I’ll keep walking with you, since everything you taught me in the short time we were together I’ll keep applying… Lately I forget that I’m alive. I need to feel that I am. That’s why I set you free, Lucía. This is my last letter. I love you. Alberto Hernández.»

Alberto fell asleep on his desk, after reading that last letter more than a hundred times. Each time he cried less as he read it, and with that he felt his soul being cleansed. For the first time in years, he fully accepted that his Lucía, his first and only love, was no longer there.

Meanwhile, as Alberto slept… Lucía watched him, smiling. At last she could leave; she would rest in peace; she was sure now that after sixteen years her beloved could move on and continue with his life… could feel alive.

The End.

Author’s note: Letting go is always hard.
