The beautiful woman, sitting in front of her cell phone, answered several emails and had no idea that her ex-partner was stalking her at that very moment, waiting for the slightest chance to have her close to him.

—Miranda, tomorrow at three in the afternoon you must be at the meeting without fail —her best friend reminded her. The young woman had been a bit distracted for several days; she knew something was wrong.

She had too many calls from her ex-boyfriend Guzmán; every three or four hours a day, the man called her demanding to know where she was. She ended up hanging up the call and turning off her cell phone. She was starting to get distressed, since she knew that behavior wasn’t normal.

—Miranda, are you here? —Verónica insisted, touching her arm.

—Yes, sorry, I’m here.

—You’re lying to me, something’s wrong with you, I want to know what it is.

—Nothing, I’m just reading the messages —she lied, focusing on her cell phone again.

—Could you tell me why you always turn off your cell phone? Sometimes I call you and I get the voicemail; it’s kind of shameless, what you’re doing right now: you’re perfectly calm answering messages and emails, but me, your best friend, you don’t answer my calls —Verónica was indignant, since she was incapable of behaving that way with Miranda. Miranda remained silent; she had nothing credible to answer.

Her intense blue eyes looked toward the floor, before the penetrating gaze of Verónica’s brown eyes. Both very delicate, white-skinned, very popular for their beauty since university, and now at work they were the most desired women in the place.

In the message Miranda had just received, Guzmán had written to her that she looked beautiful in that dress, that he wished he had her. That meant he was close to her. Frightened, she looked to the sides to see if she could spot him. But it was useless. Sitting on the restaurant terrace, the atmosphere was fresh and not very crowded at this time of day. But despite that, some tables were full.

—What are you looking for, did you lose something?

—Can we leave this place? —Miranda’s expression changed completely; she had a bad feeling.

< You look even more beautiful when you’re scared, don’t be afraid of me, I just want to make you mine >

Miranda couldn’t hide her face, and before Verónica’s perplexed gaze, she turned as white as a sheet of paper.

—Don’t lie to me, of course something’s wrong with you, Miranda!… —Verónica stood up and looked to the sides searching for whatever had frightened her best friend; seeing nothing, she intuited that what had scared her was on her cell phone and, without warning, snatched the device from Miranda in a second. She tried to take it back, but Verónica wouldn’t allow it and started reading the messages. One after another, and as she read them she felt the blood drain from her face, to the point of having to sit down because her legs couldn’t support her weight.

< I want you, Miranda, I want to have you like always >

< I need to see you, come on, answer the cell phone >

< Wretch, nobody ignores me, answer the damn phone >

< You’ll be mine whether you like it or not >

The last messages frightened her to the core; it was evident that Miranda was being harassed by the womanizer Guzmán; she had left him because of his infidelity, but apparently he was completely unhinged by her friend’s decision.

—I think I managed to read more than forty messages and they’re all from today. Since when has this been happening to you?

—Weeks, since I left him, but the last three days it’s gotten worse and he’s even threatened me with death. To tell you the truth, I don’t think you should have found out.

—We must ask for help, I fear for your safety. I don’t understand why you didn’t trust me, and besides, why do you say that last part?

—I thought it was nonsense, that it would pass, but I suppose this is all serious.

Immediately two messages arrived, one to each of the women:

< Miranda, I told you to keep the secret >

She stood up from the table, looking to the sides in deep despair.

< You’ll die for getting between us >

Verónica read the message and, from the shock, dropped the cell phone on the table.

—Miranda, I just got a message from Guzmán telling me I’ll die!

Miranda, frightened and hyperventilating from the shock, felt her tears start to flow and run down her cheeks.

—Run, here he comes! —Miranda shouted, remembering that Guzmán had told her he would murder anyone who found out about her situation; that’s why she hadn’t told her best friend anything, to protect her from him.

Verónica, astonished, watched as a large black SUV approached them and, without warning, they shot at Miranda, leaving her dead on the ground in an instant. Verónica couldn’t move, since she felt the burning and sharp pain of the shots as they entered one by one into her chest. The last thing she saw before dying was how people tried to help her, while her friend’s body bled out beside her.

The End.

Unsolicited advice: Never allow a person with a disturbed mind to stay in contact with you; people like that don’t change and they always destroy everything they touch.
