—Come on, I need you to hurry. Do you think we have a whole lifetime to get out?
—Hold on! Could you calm down? I have to look beautiful tonight; it’s not like we go out to the human plane every day, so I have to be perfect.
—You’re perfect! An immortal witch with the face of an earthly model. You’d better hurry; we need to get out and find our victim for the Samhain ritual; today is the only day we can ease a little of our weakness, the one that condemns us to live like this.
—Did you get everything for the ritual? I’m talking about the candles, parchments, and essences.
—Yes, everything is ready; in fact, the cauldron is prepared for the foolish victims.
Both witches smiled, pleased. Aleyda and Dania stood enthusiastically in front of the mirror, so they could look at their beautiful reflection. Both smiles turned more malevolent. Immediately, Aleyda extended her arm toward the great reflector, which in the world of witches they called a “portal”, bringing her image with her. It materialized in front of her, seeing the reflection made flesh that had no power… since it was a simple human. The lifeless body fell to the floor upon entering the new reality.
Dania did the same, leaving two temporarily paralyzed bodies behind her.
Then both crossed the portal, entering human reality, usurping the identity of the innocent mortals. When they returned, they would go back to their world and leave the mortals’ bodies on their beds; they would wake them and with a powerful spell implant false memories of that night, so they would never realize what happened.
—We have about five hours to find Jack and two foolish humans to offer in sacrifice in the Samhain ritual, so we both get one more year of life —said Dania, excited, with a roguish face.
—Dania! Are you thinking of seeing that Jack again? You’ve been doing it for hundreds of years, not to say centuries. Doesn’t the man bore you? —asked Aleyda with a face of disgust and contempt.
—Don’t butt in! Besides, the man charms me; he has a great sense of humor; definitely, since he mocked Satan, he has improved his way of being… The condemned has made me fall in love with him! On the other hand, the fact that he mocked the fallen angel makes him even more irresistible in my eyes.
—If he didn’t bewitch you, you fool! Anyway… it’s your problem; I really see your stupid feelings as absurd. The man isn’t that handsome and he’s a bit egocentric; I really find him a bit shocking. Thank the gods, I only have to look for the humans and I’m not going around lovesick over earthly specters.
Dania ignored her centuries-old friend’s comment.
In less time than they expected, both achieved their goals. Dania had had some passionate hours with Jack. While Aleyda had captured two beautiful but useless humans; this way they would gain more beauty, and the Samhain ritual would grant them another year of life. Besides, both would ask to be less vain, since they suffered from a deep and terrible vanity… a contradictory action because they always offered beautiful men in the ritual to obtain more beauty; apparently, that was what kept them from seeing improvement in their requests during all those centuries.
Daily, both witches cast spells on their companions who lived in their village and on all the places they visited, just to see them and keep them all horrible and unattractive; this way, Dania and Aleyda would always be the most beautiful in that world or anywhere.
That’s how every Halloween, ugly, bitter, hunchbacked witches came out of the portals into this reality, willing to offer several humans to Satan to try to recover their beauty; and in turn they offered the corresponding human in the Samhain ritual to have one more year of life.
But the reality was that for centuries it had been useless to recover the beauty issue, because there is a hidden pact that nobody knows about, with Jack and the eternal fallen rebel angel.
It consisted of Jack being allowed to materialize in the flesh for a single night each year, so he could have relations with a beautiful supernatural woman; he didn’t want to stop feeling the incredible pleasure. In exchange, he had to deliver the lives of several humans to the fallen angel on Halloween.
It was a pact Satan thought Jack could never achieve, since he could not, or was not allowed to, murder humans… he could only scare them… but it was more than evident that the scoundrel was always one step ahead in intellect over the fallen rebel, because Jack ended up getting what he wanted so much. How did he do it?
Well, on the only night he was allowed to be legally on Earth — the day of his pact — he made sure to seduce a strong and vain witch named Dania, manipulating her with a spell so that every year she would want to be even more beautiful, and at the same time making sure she lashed out against her companions… That way the enchantment would branch out, and for every dead man they offered to Satan for their beauty, Jack would get one more day on the earthly plane on Halloween day.
If Dania broke the spell, he would have more time to find another powerful witch to keep him in the human plane… Everything worked out perfectly… And Satan, as always, very happy.
That’s how everything got out of control, and with her actions among her companions, this simple witch named Dania, with the help of her friend Aleyda, unintentionally turned Halloween night… into the night of hundreds of sacrifices, so much so that in the human plane, in many lands that they — humans — call countries, the night ended up being called “Night of the Witches.”
As you can see, reality always has a background. Will you also have an immortal form in other worlds? And if so… will you also contribute a human for the condemned of Satan?
